What is Memorialization?

Memory is a powerful tool for encouraging listening, dialogue, and the collective building of societies free from violence. Collective memories of the painful events our country has experienced will only transcend and become the seeds of peaceful societies when they are the subject of intergenerational, intercultural, and interdisciplinary analysis and discussion; when together we find the paths to non-repetition.

Then, the women and men who have witnessed and survived the cruelest moments of the Internal Armed Conflict, who have had to silently bear their history and testimony for so many years, will be able to feel the peace of mind that there is a new generation that will carry on their legacy, that will not forget their pain or their teachings, that will be committed to the search for Truth, Justice, Reparation and Non-Repetition.

Landscapes of Memory

In partnership with CONAVIGUA and responding to the demands of the survivors, both organizations have promoted the creation and enhancement of the Memorial to the Victims of Forced Disappearance Landscapes of Memory, inaugurated on June 21, 2018 and located in the area known as Palabor, in San Juan Comalapa, department of Chimaltenango.

Landscapes of Memory is a Memorial, a Sacred Place that seeks to redefine the Historical Site used for terror, in a Space of Memory intended to honor all the victims of Forced Disappearance in the country, promoting in it the construction of collective memories, intergenerational dialogue, human rights, the vindication of the lives that were cut short.
